A 2017 “Best in Class” award was given to Ontario Potato for their weekly contribution to the Daily Bread Food Bank. The family-owned business won the award due to their incredible support for the fight against hunger, which is still a significant issue in Ontario.
Specifically, Ontario Potato donates 2000lbs of potatoes to families and individuals all across the GTA and Ontario through the Daily Bread Food Bank. The Daily Bread Food Bank distributes these potatoes to meal programs at food banks, hostels, shelters, and community centres.
Ontario Potato Dist. Inc. is located near Alliston, Ontario and farms, packs, stores, and distributes potatoes. The company’s current president is Danny Cappuccitti and was founded by his father and uncle. The entire farm takes up 18 parcels of land and produces potatoes yearly from April to the end of October.
Partnering with the Daily Bread Food Bank is available for any corporation in the GTA. This year, Ontario Potato was chosen and recognized by the organization over hundreds of other participating companies for their generous donations.
“Daily Bread relies on corporations who believe that giving back is not just a business practice, but a way of life. They help us to provide food and resources for so many people in need,” says Gail Nyberg, Executive Director of the Daily Bread Food Bank, who will be retiring in 2018.
While there are 20 nominated companies, only six of them go on to win “Best in Class” awards. The organization also depends on the corporate sector for most of their donations. Millions of pounds of food are donated as a result of these companies that strive to help the community.
“All nominees demonstrate a commitment to community through their support for Daily Bread,” says the organization.
Still, Ontario Potato donated one of the largest amounts of food this year. 2000lbs a week of potatoes are sure to make it to those in need.
In addition, giving back to the community has always been a top priority for the potato company. Ontario Potato also donates to local schools, churches, and the Ontario Lung Association.
An annually elected volunteer board of directors run the Daily Bread Food Bank. They rely heavily on companies that donate food like, Ontario Potato. Thanks to these types of donations, the organization can produce a healthy amount of food to distribute across the province. Their overall vision is to “End poverty and hunger in our communities.” They also work towards reducing poverty by providing food and promoting social change.
“Daily Bread’s work would not be possible without the extraordinary commitment of all our corporate donors,” says the organization.
Overall, Ontario Potato is appreciative and honoured to be given a “Best in Class” award. The company looks forward to donating more potatoes in the future as well as participating in other charities in the community.
